1 Adam-Smith, Patsy There Was a Ship
Melbourne Thomas Nelson Australia 1983 0170062627 / 9780170062626 1st Illustrated Edition Hardcover
Quarto Size [approx 24cm x 30.5cm]. Near Fine in Near Fine dustjacket. Illustrated with black & white photographs. Gift inscription to half-title page. 239 pages From the moment that Patsy Adam-Smith saw the little coastal trader ease her way out of Bass Strait and heard her crew talk of reefs, wrecks and sand shoals, she was bewitched. Determined to go to sea herself, she persuaded the owner to let her sail on the "Sheerwater" - cooking, taking a turn at the wheel and working her passage round the lovely, scattered islands of Bass Strait. She then spent 6 years on the Naracoopa and was the first woman to be granted signed Articles in Australian waters. Here she tells of her love affair with the sea and ships, with the small ketches that no longer trade around the Australian coast. ID148778

Pictures, Patterns & Objects. Rock-Art of the Torres Strait Islands, Northeastern Australia, Brady, Liam M.
6 Brady, Liam M. Pictures, Patterns & Objects. Rock-Art of the Torres Strait Islands, Northeastern Australia
North Melbourne Australian Scholarly Publishing 2010 1921875062 / 9781921875069 1st Edition Softcover
Small Quarto Size. MINT - a NEW copy. Colour plates and photographs. Black & white maps. 497 pages Positioned at one of anthropology's most significant boundaries, the Torres Strait Islands and their indigenous inhabitants have fascinated scientists for well over a century. Pictures, Patterns, and Objects explores the rich yet relatively unknown rock-art of the area to investigate Islander artistic expression as an indicator of social interaction. This richly illustrated study employs digital technology to recover rapidly fading rock paintings. Liam M. Brady outlines how Islander and Aboriginal artistic expression is part of a much broader regional sphere that traverses significant social and linguistic boundaries, and argues that patterns of interaction across the hunter-gatherer and horticultural peoples are far more extensive than previously thought. ID260675

Bibliotheca Australiana #11. Four [4] fold-out maps. Eleven [11] Black & white illustrations [four fold-out]. xxx, 204, 124, 20 pages + 60 pages Alexander Dalrymple was a Scottish geographer and the first Hydrographer of the British Admiralty. He was the main proponent of the theory that there existed a vast undiscovered continent in the South Pacific - Terra Australis Incognita. He produced thousands of nautical charts, mapping a remarkable number of seas and oceans for the first time, and contributing significantly to the safety of shipping. Whilst translating some Spanish documents captured in the Philippines in 1752, Dalrymple had found Luis Váez de Torres' testimony proving a passage south of New Guinea now known as Torres Strait. This discovery led Dalrymple to publish the "Historical Collection of the Several Voyages and Discoveries in the South Pacific Ocean" in 1770-1771, which aroused widespread interest in his claim of the existence of an unknown continent. Meanwhile James Cook had been appointed in his place to lead an expedition to the South Pacific which in 1770 discovered the east coast of Australia. ID272786
