Colour and black & white illustrations. 368 pages The Darwin raid is usually portrayed as a wholesale disaster for the Allies, and a day full of military ineptitude. This book shows the defenders were alert and fought with purpose. Arguably it was the Japanese that wasted much of their attacking strength, and in this way the Darwin defenders avoided a much larger catastrophe. The book provides a timely and fresh analysis of the raid and most importantly it draws on specially translated Japanese sources. ID273555

7790 Lewis, Tom Dr Honour Denied Teddy Sheean A Tasmanian Hero... And other brave warriors of the Royal Australian Navy
Adelaide Avonmore Books 2016 0987151975 / 9780987151971 1st Edition Softcover
Small Quarto Size [approx 17.5cm x 24cm]. MINT - a NEW copy. Illustrated with Colour and Black & White Photographs. Colour and black & white illustrations. 317 pages Teddy Sheean was part of the evacuation of his warship, the corvette Armidale sinking fast while around it swarmed Japanese aircraft, shooting with abandon. Teddy turned back to his gun, an Oerlikon 20mm anti-aircraft cannon with a broad leather strap to secure the gunner. He began firing... a courageous Tasmanian determined to do his best to save his mates and his ship. He should have received a VC. Also compares the bravery of Sheean with other Australian naval heroes who should have been decorated with the Victoria Cross. Reveals that the RAN was proud of the ‘Armidale’ and her fight and did not cover up her lost. ID288510
