Canberry Tales An Informal History, Mawer, G.A.
8603 Mawer, G.A. Canberry Tales An Informal History
Melbourne Australian Scholarly Publishing 2012 192187564X / 9781921875649 1st Edition Softcover
Large octavo size [16x24cm approx]. MINT - a NEW copy. Illustrated with Black & White Photographs and Maps. 248 pages Long before there was Canberra, there was Canberry. At a deep waterhole on the Molongo River Aboriginal people gathered for a corroboree, a Waterloo veteran dispossessed them by establishing a cattle station and of his convicts turned bushranger. The place then hosted in turn a courthouse, a parsonage, a piggery and a sheep stud. After Federation, Canberry, which had been renamed Acton by an absent English landlord, became the base from which the national capital was built. The book explores, through the stories of its occupants down the centuries, the history of this remarkable microcosm, and tells how its Aboriginal name survived to grace a city for all Australians, black and white. ID270767

MINT - a NEW copy. Colour and black & white illustrations. The discolouration at the spine edge in the picture is actually part of the cover not a flaw. 268 pages The southern hemisphere is mainly land. So said medieval Europeans, raised on a heady brew of folklore, biblical revelation and geographical theory. It is how they imagined it. So powerful was the hold of this received wisdom that when geographical discoveries, however insignificant, were made in the southern oceans, they were greeted as evidence that the expected continental landmasses, rich and fertile, might at last have been found. ID276073

South Sea Argonaut: James Colnett and the Enlargement of the Pacific 1772 - 1803, Mawer, Granville Allen
8608 Mawer, Granville Allen South Sea Argonaut: James Colnett and the Enlargement of the Pacific 1772 - 1803
North Melbourne Australian Scholarly Publishing 2017 1925588416 / 9781925588415 1st Edition Trade Paperback
MINT - a NEW copy. Illustrated with black and white plates and maps. 246 pages 'Who is Colnett?' So asks Jack Aubrey in Patrick O'Brian's Far Side of the World. Who indeed. As an adventurous teenager, James Colnett had sailed with Cook in the Resolution. He later became a pioneer in the Pacific sea otter trade, nearly starting a war with Spain in the process. He attempted to force Japan and Korea to admit British trade, and failing that smuggled pelts into China. He conducted a whaling reconnaissance to the Galapagos Islands and transported convicts to New South Wales. One way or another, he managed to intersperse fighting his country's enemies in the American and French wars with thirteen years plying the South Seas. Seeing himself as a latter-day Argonaut, he reflected that his working life had been devoted to 'enlarging the bounds of Navigation and Commerce'. The Pacific gave him ample scope. ID296905

The Wild Colonial Boys: Jack Doolan and His Song, Mawer, Granville Allen
8609 Mawer, Granville Allen The Wild Colonial Boys: Jack Doolan and His Song
North Melbourne Arcadia 2016 1925333930 / 9781925333930 Revised and Updated Edition Softcover
12mo [approx 12.7x18.7cm]. MINT - a NEW copy. Black & white illustrations. 98 pages First published in 2004. Allen Mawer found John Doolan and confirmed that the song was right to say that he had been born in Castlemaine. Even more remarkably, Doolan's personal history had connections with the song. And how that came about was quite a story in itself. This revised edition incorporates additional family research by Joy Munns that has traced the last years of John Doolan's brief life after his release from Pentridge in 1882. It also updates research into the song, narrowing the date range for its creation and further undermining the argument for its Irish rather than Australian origin. ID293717

He left his native Scotland as a young soldier and travelled half way around the world to a new land where from being a corporal in the Rum Corps he rose to become a leading merchant in Sydney.
