James Bodell enlisted in the British army in the 1840s, emigrated to Van Diemen's land, moved to the gold rush in Victoria in 1856. in 1863 he volunteered to serve in New Zealand during the Maori wars, finally settling in Tauranga where he was an outstanding pioneer.
