Octavo Size [approx 15.5 x 22.8cm]. Very Good condition. A few minor marks to the covers; small chip to lower front corner and spine ends. Previous owner's lightly inked to spine. The fold-out map has a small [now properly repaired on underside] tear on a fold but is otherwise in excellent condition. Quite scarce. Gift inscription by Hans Mincham to title page. 6 pages & large folding map. [176pp] The primary object of the expedition was to fill in a blank that remained in the south-west corner of the map of the Northern Territory, to verify the estimated positions [by earlier explorers] of ranges and hills in the area. The Mackay Expedition left Adelaide on 20th May and disbanded on the return journey at Oodnadatta on 17 August. Also includes a number of items relating to South Australian history, especially a 90 pages ‘Reminiscences of Johnson Frederick Hayward’ including a portrait of Hayward. Hayward was a notable figure in the development of the pastoral industry.
